Climb Lomnicky peak

Climb Lomnicky peak with your Professional Mountain Guide

Climbing Lomnický štít with an experienced mountain guide is a truly unforgettable adventure. Rising to 2,633 meters above sea level, it is the second highest peak in Slovakia and across the entire Carpathian mountain range. We provide several climbing options, and your guide will assist you in selecting the route that best suits your fitness level and previous experience..

Main Routes to Lomnicky peak

For beginners or children, the Normal Route is the most suitable option. The ascent starts at Lomnické sedlo, and within approximately two to three hours we reach the summit. As a reward, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views, refreshments at the highest-altitude bar in Slovakia, and the admiration of visitors who arrived by cable car.

For those who want to reach the top via one of the longest routes, we recommend the ascent via the Jordan Route. The climb can begin either at Hrebienok or at Téryho chata. From Téry’s Hut, we continue to Jordan Saddle, located on the ridge descending from the Pyšné Peaks, and then follow the ridge all the way to the summit. The final section is secured with iron staples and chains. The descent follows the Normal Route.

If you would like to enjoy this route in a shorter version, we suggest starting from Lomnické sedlo and climbing via the Gipsy Via Ferrata beneath the western face of Lomnický štít, connecting to the final section of the Jordan Route through Téry’s Couloir.

Looking for a true mountaineering experience? We recommend climbing Lomnický štít via the Birkenmajer Ridge. The tour begins at Lomnické sedlo and follows a stunning exposed ridge above the mountain’s western face. The difficulty ranges from II to IV on the UIAA scale. One advantage of this route is that the guide can adjust the difficulty to match your abilities—making it slightly easier or more challenging—so you can enjoy the climb to the fullest. The descent, as with most routes, follows the Normal Route.

All of these ascents are, of course, led by a certified UIAGM mountain guide.

Who Is the Ascent of Lomnický štít Suitable For?

Ascents starting from Lomnické sedlo are among the shorter and physically less demanding options, yet they remain highly attractive. However, they still require good physical fitness and confidence when moving over rocky terrain.

The route includes exposed sections with steep climbs, extended periods of continuous movement, and technically demanding passages that can be both physically and mentally exhausting. In addition to endurance and leg strength, it is essential to feel comfortable in alpine terrain and capable of handling sections with basic climbing elements. Previous experience in high-altitude hiking or solid general fitness preparation is therefore a necessary prerequisite for a safe and successful ascent.

Recommended Preparation Hikes Before Climbing Lomnický štít

Before attempting Lomnický štít, it is important to build sufficient fitness and gain experience in high-mountain terrain. Recommended preparation hikes such as:

  • Kriváň
  • Rysy
  • Slavkovský štít

These climbs help improve endurance, stability on rocky terrain, and orientation in more demanding sections. They provide excellent preparation for the longer and more technical ascent of Lomnický štít, significantly increasing your chances of a safe and successful climb.

Ascent and Descent Time

The total time required depends on the chosen route, participants’ experience, and current mountain conditions.

  • From Lomnické sedlo: approximately 4 hours
  • From Hrebienok: approximately 7–8 hours

Distance and Elevation Gain

Lomnický štít offers several route options with varying distances and elevation gains.

The shorter Normal Route starts at Lomnické sedlo, which is accessible by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica. From there, the climb covers approximately 3 km with around 450 meters of elevation gain. This option is ideal for those who prefer a quicker ascent with lower physical demands.

Difficulty and Technical Grade

A good level of fitness and experience in alpine hiking are required.

Difficulty levels:

  • I–II UIAA – Normal Route, Jordan Route, Gipsy
  • III UIAA – Ridge traverse via Pyšné Peaks to Lomnický štít

Less experienced climbers will appreciate easier routes such as the Jordan Route or Gipsy.
